Re: Master Level Divination & Discernment

Marty looks up from the Book of Vile Darkness, 3rd Edition, abridged, she was reading.  She also had an extensive collection of notes to the side.  "Hello."  She addresses the young man.

Re: Master Level Divination & Discernment

"Hey," he says, catching sight of what she's reading. "Oh, that's a good book. I've read that a couple of times. Tried to read the original text once, but y'know. Not everybody can withstand having their soul sucked out. I'm Varus, by the way, Cleric of Sonponna."

Re: Master Level Divination & Discernment

"Marty."  she replies.  "Rogue student, freshman year."  She offers a hand.  "Pleased to meet you."  She noted the departures and cased the room for possible ambushes and route of escape, in case this guy turned out to be a creep.

She looks down to the book again.  "So you understand this stuff?"  She asked.  "Maybe you can explain the difference between a daemon and a..."  She checked her notes.  "...yugoloth?  Or between a devil and a baatezu.  They seem to be names for the same thing, but that can't be right."

Re: Master Level Divination & Discernment

"No, that's right. See, there was a big public relations push back in the second era. Demons started going by Tanarri, Devils started going by Baatezu. Thought it made them more approachable. Daemons changed to Yugoloth, but they never bothered to change back."

Re: Master Level Divination & Discernment

"Huh."  If the guy wanted something, he'd have to bring it up on his own.

"Well, if that's the case I got the lower planes covered."  She slammed the book shut  "Now I gotta figure out the modrons."

Re: Master Level Divination & Discernment

"That area I'm less familiar with," Valus says. "I'd recommend Euclid Darwin's 'On the Elements of Species', but I've never been able to get through it myself."

She wrote the author and title down.  "Euclid Darwin, thanks."  She got up and went to find a librarian.

Re: Master Level Divination & Discernment

Looking around, Marty finds a fox-faced woman with little round-glasses shelving books. "Yes?"

Re: Master Level Divination & Discernment

The fox face threw her off at first, despite all she'd seen in Sigil over the last couple days.  She'd recently grown an interest in ancient prophesy, and the national epic of Karameikos, was the Song of Halav and in that tale the beastmen were the major threat to national survival.  Though of course all that happened long before Karameikos was Karameikos.  The beastmen in the Song were wolf-headed, but she'd heard rumors recently of the bodies of fox-headed, or maybe dog-headed - the rumors varied -  people washing  up on the banks of the Foamfire River north of Threshold.

This person probably wasn't from the Black Peak range, and almost certainly had nothing to do with those old tales and the related prophesies.  But the possibility gave her pause.  "Yeah.  Hi."  She replied after what was probably a rudely long pause.  "Hey, you aren't from Mystara, are you?"  She asked.

"Hmm? Yes. Yes, I am. My name is Narvallia, may I help you?"
